From Pod to Presidency
1471
Portuguese sailors reach the coast and name it the Gold Coast — for gold above the ground. The true gold, the cocoa that would define the nation, still sleeps in the forests beyond.
1879
The blacksmith Tetteh Quarshie returns from Fernando Po with Amelonado cocoa pods and plants them at Mampong. From those few trees grows the finest cocoa industry on Earth.
1957
At midnight, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declares Ghana free forever. Cocoa — the crop of the people — becomes the treasure of a sovereign Republic.
1961
The tradition of the House begins: state visitors receive chocolate pressed from Ghanaian cocoa, wrapped in gold, sealed in wax. A small decree. A grand gesture.
2026
The register opens to all: three hundred pieces, ten ateliers, thirty-two artisans. What was once reserved for presidents now travels to any table worthy of one.
Words of the Osagyefo
Four sentences pressed into the lids of the Reserve coffrets — chosen by the Keeper of Words, engraved by Worker XX.
“I am not African because I was born in Africa, but because Africa was born in me.”
“We face neither East nor West; we face forward.”
“The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.”
“Freedom is not something that anybody can be given; freedom is something people take.”
